Austrian police assist in monitoring the EU's external borders
There are currently 100 police officers on international duty.
Since the refugee crisis in 2015, the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior has taken targeted measures to combat irregular migration, cross-border crime and related forms of criminal activity.
Specially trained police units play an important role in this. In addition to FRONTEX forces and document advisers, Austrian police officers provide support to local border police forces at the EU's external border and at borders along migration routes. In Serbia, Northern Macedonia and Hungary, and as of 4 December 2021 also in Montenegro, Austrian police contingents support the border police of these countries in monitoring the borders and in the fight against cross-border crime.
The police officers are equipped with all-terrain vehicles, drones, vehicles with thermal imaging cameras and hand-held thermal imaging cameras. In addition, a police dog handler and a service dog are deployed in Hungary.
