On 11 January 2022, Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner deployed 18 police officers to the Hungarian-Serbian border.

The police officers will support the Hungarian border guard in the prevention of irregular migration and cross-border crime. This increases the total number of Austrian police officers at the Hungarian-Serbian border to 35 officers. Austria is also supporting its neighbouring country with additional equipment, for example a heartbeat detector, off-road vehicles as well as thermal imaging technology.

At an official ceremony on 11 January, Minister Gerhard Karner acknowledged the previous successful missions of Austrian police officers at the Hungarian border – for example, in January 2022, Austrian police officers were able to assist in the arrest of three migrant smugglers.
