Austria participates in FRONTEX-charter operation to Pakistan

2 Pakistani nationals were transferred from Austria to Islamabad

In the course of a charter-return operation to Pakistan coordinated by FRONTEX, two Pakistani nationals from Austria were handed over to the authorities in Islamabad on 26 April 2022. In addition to Austria and Germany, Cyprus also participated. In total, 38 Pakistani nationals were returned to their country of origin.

The individual cases of all persons returned from Austria were comprehensively examined in a procedure based on the rule of law and the asylum procedure was concluded with a negative result. The recognition rate for asylum applications from Pakistani nationals is currently very low: in 2021, the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (BFA) only issued a decision granting protection in around 2% of cases. Due to the low recognition rate, Pakistani nationals are also subject to FAST Track procedures (average procedure duration of 27 days) and accelerated procedures (first instance decision within 72 hours).
