Austria deports Iraqis to Baghdad
Two convicted Iraqis, a 28-year-old man and his 30-year-old cousin, were deported to their home country by the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum on April 14 and 15, 2023.
A 28-year-old Iraqi was flown to Baghdad on a scheduled flight on the night of April 15/16, accompanied by an escort. The man came to Austria in September 2015 against the backdrop of the migration crisis. His asylum application was rejected in March 2018. In 2020 he was sentenced to two years in prison for "participation in a terrorist organization" and "incitement to commit terrorist offenses and condoning terrorist offenses", which he has since served.
The man's 30-year-old cousin was taken to Baghdad on April 14. The man has also been convicted in Austria.
These return operations are the result of the recently significantly improved cooperation between Austrian and Iraqi authorities. Further deportations to Iraq are planned.
