Austrian Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner opened the new training center for Tunisian border guards in Nefta during a working visit to Tunisia on 17th of November 2023. The migration situation was on the agenda during the working meeting with the Tunisian Minister of the Interior.

"We must prevent people from making the dangerous journey across the sea to Europe in the first place, where thousands drown," Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner said during his working visit to Tunisia. "The key to this is a robust border protection and the fight against migrant smuggling, which make these crossings possible. Tunisia has made important progress in this regard," the Austrian Minister emphasized.

One of these important advances is the opening of the border protection center at the Algerian border on 17th of November 2023. Karl Nehammer initiated the establishment of the center during his term as Federal Minister of the Interior; the training centre has been set up with the support of Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands.
