Since December 2022, 188 smugglers have been arrested in Hungary as part of Operation Fox with the involvement of Austrian police officers.

Border and criminal police officers also carry out priority operations at Austria's external borders. In addition, international investigations are being carried out with Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the involvement of the Police Directorate Burgenland.

Border controls are an important measure in the fight against the smuggling mafia, which is why border controls are carried out at the Austrian border with Hungary, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in particular with the support of several hundred soldiers from the Austrian Armed Forces. But Austria is not the only country carrying out border controls. The countries of the Western Balkans are supported in protecting their borders by around 130 police officers from Austria, for example in Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro, as well as within the framework of Operation Fox, where around 40 police officers from Austria are currently on duty in Hungary.
