Austria is successfully resisting the international trend in illegal migration

In June 2024, 1,835 asylum applications were submitted in Austria, a decrease of 64 percent.

“We can see from the half-year results that the measures are taking effect and that smugglers are avoiding Austria. We are observing a massive reduction in illegal border crossings, a significant decrease in asylum applications, and a reduction in so-called family reunification in the area of asylum applications," emphasized Minister of Interior Gerhard Karner at the presentation of the half-yearly asylum and return statistics on 19 July 2024 at the Ministry of the Interior.

Compared to the same period last year, there has been a significant decline. In the first half of 2023, 23,142 asylum applications were submitted, whereas this year there were 13,479 applications, representing a decrease of 9,663 applications (42 percent decrease).

Applications for family reunification have also fallen sharply. In June, there were 414 applications for entry into Austria, 1,771 fewer than in January and significantly lower than the monthly average for the previous year (1,169).
